Johnston County, NC, a JoCo mini-tour

Barbara will be in Selma, Smithfield, Pine Level, and Princeton to read and talk about writing memoir and preserving stories of family members and war veterans. On Thursday, May 8, we will celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe day, the end of war! Sponsored by the Johnston County Arts Council.

The Lexington launch is sponsored by the Friends of the Lexington Library! Antionette Kerr, editor of Davidson Local, will interview Barbara as well as her brother, Edwin and sister Ellen. Barbara will do a brief reading from the book and all three will be happy to sign your copy!

Inside the museum, Barbara will lead a reading/writing workshop entitled, “We Cannot Forget”: Telling Our Stories of War at Home and on the Battlefield. In addition to presenting insights from her own research and writing, she will help participants develop their own ideas for research and writing. Free. Registration not required.

North Carolina Writers Conference

During this daylong annual conference, celebrated for its 76th years by NC writers, Barbara will join other poets-turned-prose writers for a panel discussion entitled, “Blurring the Lines: The Fine Art of Genre-Jumping,” how one genre feeds the other, how expectations of readers (and writers) shift, even how a poet's skill with imagery and line breaks can embellish the prose.

Barbara will partner with fellow South Carolina Press author, Mary Martha Greene, who wrote The Cheese Biscuit Lady Tells All (2019) and The Cheese Biscuit Lady Kiss My Aspic. Barbara and Mary Martha share a Southern tradition and a love of storytelling.

Several decades of West Point graduates and their families will gather to enjoy lunch and learning about the 30th Infantry Division’s 1944-45 battle across Europe. A talk by Barbatra,  illustrated with photographs and maps from the trip and followed by a q and a session will greet guests. Advanced registration required.
